2024 T35 Recipients
Meet Our 2024 Cohort!
The BDHSC would like to congratulate the 2024 T35 Recipients. Read on to learn more about the cohort and their research interests:
Joshua Cook (he/him)
University of West Florida
Mentor: Dr. Swann Adams
I’m currently a Data Science Master’s student at the University of West Florida (UWF) with a proven interest in pursuing a career as a physician-scientist while actively engaged in teaching, mentorship, research, and data science opportunities. I aim to synthesize my knowledge of the biomedical sciences, clinical research, and data science to become a physician-scientist capable of seamlessly integrating clinical care with clinical research in a way that maximizes evidence-based care options for my patients. To do so, I’ve taken a deep dive into each of these fields and am now applying to dual doctoral (M.D./Ph.D.) programs with a focus on Oncology/Cell Biology.
Lauren Holian (she/her)
University of South Carolina
Mentor: Dr. Melissa Nolan
I am a PhD student in the Biological Sciences department at the University of South Carolina. I completed a B.S. and M.Sc. at the University of Florida, studying ecology and virus life history. My PhD research focuses on disease ecology. Specifically, I am interested in the role of spatial and environmental processes in shaping host-parasite interactions.
Grant Hunter (he/him)
University of Alabama
Mentor: Dr. Forest Agostinelli
I am a PhD student in Applied Mathematics at the University of Alabama. I have always had an interest in mathematics and its applications. I desire to maintain a well-rounded approach to my studies as I learn to apply my technical skills to health science problems.
Gulnar Ibramsha (she/her)
University of South Carolina
Mentor: Dr. Pieter Baker
I am a graduate student in the masters in health IT program. I have been working as an RA and currently working as an instructional TA for the department of Engineering and Computing at USC. My research interests focus upon AI applications in the field of healthcare with emphasis upon social determinants of health and health equity.
Brenda Macias (she/her)
Tufts University
Mentor: Dr. Dezhi Wu
I recently graduated with a Master’s in Mathematics from Tufts University, specializing in Computational Mathematics and Data Science. My research and career pursuits revolve around applying mathematics to Data Science and leveraging data analysis for social good. Last summer, I investigated alternative voting systems such as Ranked Choice Voting, exploring its efficacy in electing representatives aligned with minority voters’ preferences. My other interests: I enjoy cooking as a way to connect with my family and preserve our recipes that have been passed along from generation to generation, especially now that I have been away from home for a while.
Quotes from the Cohort
The NIH T35 program at the University of South Carolina has played an instrumental role in my development as a future physician-scientist, offering me direct mentorship under experienced public health leaders and big data analysts. I will carry the skills learned here with me for the rest of my career, and I am excited to continue working with my mentors to publish our findings!
The T35 program gave me the opportunity to integrate my research interests with public health and included me in an engaging and supportive community of researchers.
This program helped me to be certain of my future with the health sciences as a mathematician.
Learn and Conquer.
The T35 staff will provide you with everything you need to be successful in the program!
